The National Civil War Battles of the Western Theater Museum

The National Civil War Museum

The National Civil War Museum in Bardstown, Kentucky preserves and interprets one of the most important chapters of American history—the Western Theater of the Civil War. Our museum brings together rare artifacts, immersive exhibits, and powerful stories that reveal how the conflict shaped the nation and the people who lived through it

A Nationally Significant Western Theater Collection

The Western Theater played a decisive role in the Civil War, influencing military strategy, political outcomes, and the lives of millions. Our museum houses one of the largest and most comprehensive collections dedicated to this region, featuring uniforms, weapons, documents, personal items, and battlefield relics that offer a deeper understanding of the conflict.

A Multi‑Site Historical Campus on Museum Row

The National Civil War Museum is part of a unique multi‑building historical campus in Bardstown. Visitors can explore:

  • The Women’s Civil War Museum — the only museum in the nation dedicated to women’s roles in the Civil War.
  • The General Hal Moore Military Museum — honoring Bardstown native Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and American military history.
  • Old Bardstown Village — a preserved 18th–19th century frontier settlement with original log structures.

This campus creates a rich, immersive experience that connects the Civil War to the broader story of Kentucky and the American frontier.
