Did you know General Hal Moore was from right here in Bardstown? You may recognize some of his history from the 2002 blockbuster movie We Were Soldiers, but there’s even more to discover! Harold Gregory Moore Jr. was a United States Army lieutenant general and author. Born in Bardstown, he attended St Joseph Preparatory School before earning his appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. As a commanding officer, he implemented an equal opportunity policy and was a champion for individuals of all skin colors. As one of the most decorated soldiers of his time, he received numerous accolades including the Distinguished Service Cross, the U.S. military's second-highest decoration for valor, the Legion of Merit (awarded three times), the Bronze Star Medal (four times with 'V' Device), the Purple Heart, and the Air Medal (nine times). He was the first of his West Point class (1945) to be promoted to brigadier general, major general, and lieutenant general! Hal Moore truly embodies the spirit of an American hero, and if you’re interested in learning more about our local history, including the rich narratives from the Civil War, be sure to visit the civil war museum Bardstown, which showcases significant events from our past in Bardstown, Kentucky.
