On October 15th, 1863, the HL Hunley sinks for a second time during a demonstration, killing all 8 crew members and its inventor, Horace Hunley. Despite the tragedy, the boat was recovered and would continue to be used by the Confederate Navy until February 1864, when, after jamming a rudimentary torpedo into the side of the USS Housatonic, the ship mysteriously sank, although there are no signs the ship was attacked or damaged. New research, started in 2000 when the ship was recovered, is attempting to discover why the crew did not attempt to abandon ship.
Come see a replica of the Hunley at the Bardstown Civil War Museum and learn about the contributions of Sailors during the war!
