The National Civil War Battles of the Western Theater Museum ...Where history comes to life!

Welcome to The National Civil War Museum in Bardstown, Kentucky

Located on historic Museum Row in Bardstown, The National Civil War Museum is one of the nation’s most comprehensive institutions dedicated to the Western Theater of the American Civil War. Our museum complex preserves thousands of artifacts, personal items, and battlefield relics that tell the story of the conflict from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River.

As part of our expanded mission and rebranding, The National Civil War Museum now encompasses several historically significant sites:

The National Civil War Museum – Western Theater Collection

Explore one of the largest collections of Union and Confederate artifacts in the United States. Exhibits highlight Kentucky’s pivotal role in the war, major campaigns, military strategy, and the lived experiences of soldiers and civilians.

The Women’s Civil War Museum

The only museum in America dedicated exclusively to the contributions of women during the Civil War. Discover the stories of nurses, abolitionists, spies, writers, and women who shaped the nation during its most turbulent era.

The General Hal Moore Military Museum

Honoring Bardstown native Lt. General Hal Moore, this museum presents American military history from the Revolutionary War to modern conflicts. Exhibits feature rare artifacts, uniforms, weaponry, and personal items from General Moore’s life and service.

Old Bardstown Village

Step into a preserved 18th–19th century frontier settlement. This authentic log village includes ten original structures—cabins, a schoolhouse, a tavern, and more—offering a vivid look at early Kentucky life.
