The Civil War Museum and the Women’s Museum of the Civil War are America’s largest and most comprehensive museums focused on the Western Theater of the American Civil War. Spanning over 8,000 square feet, the exhibits depict the conflict between the Union and Confederacy from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi, and from Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico.Located in Bardstown, Kentucky, the Women’s Museum highlights the achievements of women of diverse backgrounds during the 1800s and the Civil War. It features accomplishments in various fields such as science, medicine, nursing, writing, journalism, civil rights, suffrage, the arts, and military service, offering a powerful women’s empowerment experience. It is believed to be the only museum of its kind in the country and is also the fourth-largest Civil War museum in the U.S.In addition, the General Hal Moore Military Museum honors Bardstown native Lt. General Hal Moore, a hero of the Vietnam and Korean Wars. This museum's exhibits cover conflicts from the American Revolution to present-day Mid-East battles, focusing on the contributions of Kentuckians. Recently, the World War I exhibit was expanded to commemorate the war's 100th anniversary.Adjacent to these museums is the Old Bardstown Village, featuring ten original 18th and 19th-century log structures that form a Colonial period settlement along Museum Row.
